What We Do

“[In The Dark] is all about listening in new ways” Time Out

In The Dark began in 2010 as a collaborative project between a new generation of radio producers and radio enthusiasts. Our aim is to create a mini-revolution in the way we think about spoken-word audio by lifting it out of its traditional settings and celebrating it in new and exciting ways.

Over the last fourteen years we have commissioned new works from producers around the world, run workshops and mentoring for new producers and staged countless live listening events at festivals, theatres, cinemas and museums.

We firmly believe that sound tells the best stories.

Our Projects
We are best known for our monthly live listening events, held in packed venues throughout London and beyond – a bit like a cinema, but without the pictures.

Some of the venues and festivals we have staged events at include:

Glastonbury

Latitude Festival

The British Library

The Wellcome Collection

The Whitechapel Gallery

The Wapping Project

Third Coast International Audio Festival

International Features Conference

We also hold regular events in Bristol, and have had teams in Manchester, Belfast, Portugal, Australia, Belgium, and Germany.

We also run an international grant scheme called The Sound Bank, which provides funding for adventurous audio projects.  Grant winning pieces have been broadcast on BBC Radio 4 (UK), RTE (Ireland), KCRW and Third Coast Festival (USA) and Third Ear (Denmark).
