Nina Garthwaite is a multimedia artist whose work is deeply rooted in sound, with branches extending into the visual arts. Nina founded In The Dark in 2010 to create a public space dedicated to creativity and experimentation in sound.
Nina has created and curated work for well known institutions including the BBC, the Barbican and the Wellcome Collection, as well as more artist-led initiatives such as Resonance FM, Assemble and the Hearsay Audio Festival. With Falling Tree, she co-created Short Cuts for BBC Radio 4, a long running series that showcased short form creative audio from around the world.
She has also taught creative and experimental audio for 8 years where she helps new makers explore sound imaginatively. She has written and given talks about creative sound around the world and been a judge on many of the major audio awards. Her essay “Imagining Together” was recently published in The Routledge Companion to the Sound of Space (2024) a reflection on In The Dark’s history and the power and potential of listening together.
As well as working in sound Nina makes animations, sculptures, prints and puppets.
